First Day!

September 3, 2010 – 2:44 pm

Last semester it felt like Matthew and i were tag team parenting. Most of the days I taught we would only see each other when we passed off Miles as one of us went to work and the other headed home. This year my schedule is great. I’m teaching Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:45 to 5:20 which means Miles can go to day care while I teach.

Matthew and I were pretty nervous about how he would handle the change but he handled it like a champ. The first morning I said “Okay Miles I’m going to work now” and he responded “I’m just going to stay here and play for a while. Later that day I came to pick him up and said “Let’s go home and see Papa”. He ran to the toys saying that he didn’t want to go. I said, “But what about Papa?” His response, “But what about me?”

Outside of loving his new found freedom from his parents, he has become a world class barefoot runner. He loves running down our sandy streets and seems impervious to cactus, yucca and the dreaded acacia, commonly known as cat claw. The picture below shows him taunting  cat claw with his fleshy little toes. That boy has guts I tell you!

In addition to running barefoot, some fun new Miles -isms include:

Using “last day” instead of yesterday

Singing Bill Monroe’s “Working on a Building” all day, everyday.

Asking “How’s your day?”

Waving to every kid he sees and saying “Hi, I’m Miles”

Boy I love this little guy.

Miles 2.5

July 26, 2010 – 2:13 pm

Over the last few months Miles has really hit his two year old stride. He’s weaned (yeah!) potty trained (for the most part) and insists on doing everything himself. He’s also become a sports player and fan. He seems to have soccer in his blood – if there is a ball around he is kicking it. He also loves baseball, which he generally refers to as “base”. He loves to watch games with his Papa and will insist on wearing his Red Sox shirt for days on end. For many months he has insisted on holding the business end of the his baseball bat when trying to hit the ball which wasn’t working so well for his batting stats. We’ve finally convinced him to hold the bat the right way and things are looking much brighter for this future t-ball player.

It’s not all sports for this guy though. His Aunt Callie recently handed down  Miles one of her old Ukuleles. Miles calls it his Uka-Lady and it is pretty safe to say he is in love. His favorite songs to sing include the alphabet (skipping letters g – p), “Old MacDonald” and “Working on a Building”

His favorite books are Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things that Go and The Best Word Book Ever. I find myself reading each of these books 5 or more times a day. I actually get pieces of these books stuck in my head. I’m not kidding, last week I had  “Oh no Piggy, your car can’t go into the water, only a propeller car can do that.” going through my head for hours.

Well I’m off to find Goldbug (those of you in the know will understand).

Until the next post,

Mama

Tadpoles!

May 25, 2010 – 2:40 pm

For the most part I feel like Miles’ life in the desert is a good one. He gets to climb rocks and chase lizards everyday and knows more about nature than many adults I know. One thing I’m always a little sad about is the lack of frogs and toads in his life. Well this year the desert provided. We had over a years work of rain this winter and water is still flowing out of many of our springs which means tadpoles – lots of them. Once we heard there were tadpoles up the road we couldn’t wait to pack our backpacks and go!

The day before we had SNOW so I was a little concerned we were only going to find tadpole remains but luckily they seemed to have pulled though the cold weather okay.

They made it!

Miles wasn't completely convinced these wiggly guys actually turn into toads.

Toads or not they were sure fun to catch.

The Steve Tilly method of Tadpole release.

He must have learned this from Steve Tilly.
